The Effect Of Food On Health

Advocates of various dietary regimens range from the well-intentioned to the well-heeled. Out of this hodgepodge of slanted information comes a welter of suggestions which, in fact, have very little or no medical basis.

Pity the poor individual who eats only "because it is good for him." A large number of well-educated, thoughtful people consume a wide range of dull, unimaginative diets because they have succumbed to the hocus-pocus of most of the nutritional propaganda showered upon them. Seldom a day goes by but what a deluge of "important new food discoveries" is not forced upon our attention. Everyone has been told, "You never outgrow your need for milk." There is a remedy for "tired blood"- and you end up with a tired wallet. For too many colds last winter, a certain vitamin mixture is supposed to build up resistance. If you feel run down, have low backache, and are logy, another concoction attributes this to retaining food too long in your intestines and guarantees to whistle things through on schedule.

Premature graying of the hair and brittle fingernails can promptly disappear upon ingestion of a particular gelatin product. Liver pills, tonics, queen bee mixtures, wheat germ extracts, and combinations of minerals are indiscriminately pawned off on hard-working, exhausted Americans who naturally enough seek a pill or a potion to give them their lost vim and vigor.

We all want a pill to guarantee weight reduction, a pill to guarantee fitness, and a pill to guarantee good health. None are available. Pills can combat illness, but they cannot promise better fitness.

The Importance Of Vitamins

Vitamin supplementation deserves special comment. The theory, simply stated, is: if a little bit is a little good, then a lot more is a lot better. This argument is not readily disposable.

Luckily, vitamins are rarely harmful. Too much A and D can cause calcification and renal calculi. But this is distinctly unusual. Vitamin preparations in many people cause an increase in the number of daily bowel movements, although they are not really laxative in the sense of causing loose bowels. It is obvious that any substance which increases the amount and bulk of nutritional elements to be wasted in the stools produces a needless loss of wholesome ingredients.

For these individuals, the administration of vitamins thereby creates a need for vitamins.
In basic chemistry vitamins play an important role. In the over-all scheme, food could be placed in a test tube of liquid with, in time, the gradual conversion of food to heat (energy) and waste products. However, this reaction would be interminable. See the equation:

If the proper enzymes or catalysts are added, and these abound in the intestines, blood stream, and liver, this process can be accelerated manifold. The end result is the same, but valuable time has been saved. In chemical reactions which have thus been catalyzed, the enzyme or catalyst contributes to speeding up the conversion of food to energy, using up the food and producing energy. This appears as:

While food is consumed in the reaction, enzymes are not. They help accelerate the production of energy to meet immediate demands. They act much as members of a local draft board who in peacetime, let us say, process three draftees a week. In wartime with increased needs they may process a hundred men a week, but they themselves are never consumed or caught up in the draft.

Item: There are now more than 450 companies in this country manufacturing vitamins. Their annual business amounts to more than $250,000,000. Medical evidence shows that at least $240,000,000 worth of these vitamins eventually goes down the drain literally. No one knows what happens to the remaining $10,000,000 worth of vitamins. If they are beneficial, they help chronically ill people who cannot maintain adequate nutrition or infants and adolescents undergoing periods of rapid growth and increased demands. And there is no medical evidence which even suggests any anti-cold or increased resistance benefits.

The Health Risks Of Microwave Cooking And Microwave Food

Convenience drives many things these days. The value placed on good health is often sacrificed in the name of getting things done quickly and easily.

Microwaves can sadly be found in most homes. We say sadly, because not only does food cooked in a microwave oven never taste quite right, it is proven to have a lower nutritional value, and more importantly, poses a risk to long term health.

There are many causes for the increase in serious health conditions in the Western World, demineralized soils, environmental toxins, processed foods, poor nutrition, medical malpractice, the list goes on. But standing proud in the vast majority of kitchens, is the Microwave Oven, which may well play an underestimated role.

Raw food offers significantly higher levels of nutrition than cooked, and it is advisable to include at least some raw food elements in your diet, even if you don't wish to follow an entirely raw diet.

Microwaved food is a long way from being a source of nutrition.

How Do Microwaves Cook Food?

Evidence is growing of the risks to human health from microwaves emitted by mobile phones and phone masts. The underlying reason being that the cells in your body are disrupted by the EMF frequencies. The same thing happens to food in a microwave oven.

When food is cooked normally, heat goes naturally from the outside to the inside. The reverse is true of microwaved food. Food is cooked from within the cells and a violent process takes place that completely alters the chemical structure of any substance cooked this way. Microwaves bombard the food and cause molecules to rotate millions of times a second.

The structure of the molecules are literally deformed and destroyed, and new, unnatural compounds are created, these compounds cannot be broken down by the human body. Vitamins, minerals and proteins are rendered useless, foods lose their bio-availability, and their energy field is altered.

Of further concern is the leaching of chemicals from the plastic containers / wraps used to microwave food.

Of course, many scientists, and bodies such as the FDA will tell us this is nonsense, but forward thinking people in the scientific community are growing in numbers, and those of interested in natural health and healing are quick to understand that this unnatural process has no place in the pursuit of good health.

The Risks of Microwaves - Studies

Research is dreadfully lacking in this important area, and of course there are political aspects to this; however, we include below some very pertinent research that has been carried out.

You may be surprised to discover that Microwave technology is over 70 years old. The technology was originally developed by the Germans during the Second World War as a radar system. Soldiers who gathered around these radars to warm themselves up developed illnesses including Cancer. It was this ability to heat that led to the Humboldt University in Berlin being given a grant in the early '40s to develop microwave ovens to provide hot meals for soldiers fighting in the Soviet Union.

Just like the soldiers who huddled around the radars, these soldiers also had major problems with their immune systems. The use of Microwaves was subsequently banned. The research fell into the hands of the Russians and research continued through the 50s and 60s. In 1976, the Soviet Union themselves issued a state law banning the use of microwave ovens, and published an international statement of warning. They came back into use during the period of Perestroika, but even today, the Russians remain far more vigilant about the acceptable use of microwaves.

Hans Hertel, a Swiss food scientist, (fired for questioning food processing methods), is well known for a small, but carefully controlled study on Microwave ovens.Working with Bernard H. Blanc of the University Institute for Biochemistry, the results were published in 1992 and are certainly fascinating

The eight study participants were strict macrobiotic eaters from the Macrobiotic Institute at Kientel, Switzerland. In intervals of two to five days, the volunteers in the study received one of the eight foods listed below. Blood sample were taken on an empty stomach before each meal, and at set intervals after eating.

raw milk from a biofarm

the same milk conventionally cooked

pasteurized milk from Intermilk Berne

the same raw milk cooked in a microwave oven

raw vegetables from an organic farm

the same vegetables cooked conventionally

the same vegetables frozen and defrosted in the microwave oven

and the same vegetables cooked in the microwave oven

Blood tests after the consumption of microwaved foods showed marked changes in the following;

Haemoglobin values decreased

Lymphocytes (white blood cells) showed a short-term decrease

HDL (good cholesterol) decreased

The ratio of good to bad cholesterol (LDL) was affected negatively

These results got worse in the second month of the study

Quoting Hertel - "There is extensive scientific literature concerning the hazardous effects of direct microwave radiation on living systems, it is astonishing, therefore, to realise how little effort has been made to replace this detrimental technique of microwaves with technology more in accordance with nature.

Although only a small study, these results should have been enough to prompt further research. However, as is often the way with these things, a large trade organization, the Swiss Association of Dealers for Electro apparatuses for Households and Industry, known simply as FEA, forced a 'gag order' through the courts against Hertel and Blanc in 1993. This was finally lifted in 1998 by the European Court of Human Rights, who held that there had been a violation of Hertel's rights in the 1993 decision.

"Effects of Microwave Radiation on Anti-infective Factors in Human Milk". Quan, Kerner, et al appeared in the In the journal Pediatrics (vol. 89, no. 4, April 1992). "Breast milk can be refrigerated safely for a few days or frozen for up to a month; however, studies have shown that heating the milk well above body temperature-37°ree;C-can break down not only its antibodies to infectious agents, but also its lysozymes or bacteria-digesting enzymes"

The November 2003 issue of The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculturereported that microwaved Broccoli lost 97% of its antioxidant chemicals it contains, compared to a loss of 11% from steamed broccoli

Dr. Lita Lee of Hawaii reported in the December 9, 1989 Lancet: "Microwaving baby formulas converted certain trans-amino acids into their synthetic cis-isomers. Synthetic isomers, whether cis-amino acids or trans-fatty acids, are not biologically active. Further, one of the amino acids, L-proline, was converted to its d-isomer, which is known to be neurotoxic (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxic (poisonous to the kidneys). It's bad enough that many babies are not nursed, but now they are given fake milk (baby formula) made even more toxic via microwaving."

In Comparative Study of Food Prepared Conventionally and in the Microwave Oven, published by Raum & Zelt in 1992, at 3(2): 43, "A basic hypothesis of natural medicine states that the introduction into the human body of molecules and energies, to which it is not accustomed, is much more likely to cause harm than good. Microwaved food contains both molecules and energies not present in food cooked in the way humans have been cooking food since the discovery of fire. Microwave energy from the sun and other stars is direct current based.

Artificially produced microwaves, including those in ovens, are produced from alternating current and force a billion or more polarity reversals per second in every food molecule they hit. Production of unnatural molecules is inevitable. Naturally occurring amino acids have been observed to undergo isomeric changes (changes in shape morphing) as well as transformation into toxic forms, under the impact of microwaves produced in ovens".

If you still have a microwave, maybe it is time to reconsider!

Basic Health Food

Attitude. Let's think about diet in general. The most basic attitudes are those expressed by the well-known statement, 'Some people eat to live, and some live to eat.'

Eating is seen either as a means of self survival and a process that must be fulfilled in order to keep body and soul together, or eating is an exceptionally satisfying experience of the senses which must be indulged in at least 3 times a day and more often if possible, or eating is a necessary function of nature which is both pleasurable and functional and is therefore to be considered as part of our daily life and culture.

Depending upon your particular personal attitude, you will either follow the inclination to pay more mental attention to diet or you will prefer to remain in the present, but temporary, comfort of familiar tastes and habits, unconcerned as to your choice of food, its quality, good or bad, and its affect upon your health or your family's.

If the sensory aspect of food is predominant then you will continue to eat and enjoy it with as little thought and consideration of the subject as possible. In fact you will find you will be more comfortable if you stop reading this article and resume what you were doing.

But ten to one you have found an interest in food has become focused because you realize it is not just sensory, but there are repercussions resulting from the type and quantity of food you eat. And in our affluent society the problem is more usually over indulgence rather than not enough food. In fact many people are so fat, yet instead of limiting their intake of food, are paying professionals to lose their weight for them! When there are people who are starving in other countries of the world we should never abuse our good fortune to replace our need with such greed.

If you can accept that in order to apply the natural rules for good health one must begin to consider that cutting down quantity is the first consideration, there is a chance that you will continue to read on.

Some Helpful Rules of Nutrition

1. The first discipline is to stop the habit in mid-stream. Cease reacting to habitual activity regarding your shopping for food and your preparation of food at mealtimes. This will bring about an opportunity for new interest in introducing new foods, re-thinking old habits, re-assessing what are necessities. Think about what you are purchasing and what you are eating. Decide to choose quality, not quantity.

2. We all know that our bodies require many vitamins, minerals, and natural substances to provide fuel for our physical and mental vitality; to build and maintain our body structure; and to sustain all the wonderful complexity of physiological function. We need lots of ingredients in the sense of a lot of variety in our food in order that our bodies have opportunity to select the ingredient they require.

3. Regarding balancing your selection of food, it is an interesting and reasonable premise that we must reduce the quantity of the foods we indulge in and eat most, because we like their tastes. Most nutritionists hear the common response to their advice to cut down on a particular food, for example, cheese - "Oh but I just love cheese!"

The other part of the discipline is to begin introducing the natural foods that we in the past have chosen to avoid. It is possible to apply this guideline to our advantage not only to increase our health and energy but in addition to extends our potential to enjoy a greater variety of food.

4. Quantity of food is often a problem in discipline. In developed countries, most of us eat far too much, so for some time we can reduce the quantity of our meals without losing any weight at all. The rule of one main meal a day may be different from our old habits, but will seem to be a luxury to those living in impoverished countries and circumstances. Try reducing your quantity as you improve the quality of your food.

5. Quality of food improves to the extent you stop and consider each purchase at the markets and to the extent that you can grow your own food organically, to complement the commercial supplies. What is the origin of the lettuce that your select, the fish, the fruits and nuts, the loin chops, the milk? There is nothing better than a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and produce as nature offers. Manufacturing and processing foods is always to the detriment of their food value. In other words, we are not buying the best quality unless we remember that rule.

6. Fresh food contains the vital nutrients. Cooking of any kind will affect these elements so cooking should be reduced to a minimum and salads, fruit and fresh food increased. One should not use aluminum cookware. Stainless steel is best.

Once anyone begins to think before eating, one is halfway towards solving the problem of diet - that is, by becoming discriminating. We have to intelligently choose to build our bodies of the chosen material. We know that whatever we eat today, to a large extent determines our health tomorrow. This is surely the simplest and best health insurance we could have. It does not rely upon chance but upon natural laws, which we can learn to live by.

To undertake responsibility for your health and others demands skill and serious recognition of the importance of your role. It is likely that your work will continue for many years so it is best to seek ways to enjoy food and its preparation as an art form. It requires skill and ability from the purchasing of good quality fruit and vegetables to the presentation of food at mealtimes.

And it does not stop here, without a reminder of the need for good digestion and to take the traditional health advice of 32 chews to every mouthful of food. Not only will this improve your digestion but increase your enjoyment through happier taste buds.

So, improve your own health and that of the whole family by taking a serious interest in food that will lead to many benefits, not only in better health for all, but it may help you to conserve your dollars also.

Is it Health Food Or Just Business?

Is it health food or is it just business?

Cheeseburger or Celebrity bod?

I have noticed with all the new weight loss products and systems out there that it is getting really difficult to differentiate what is truly good for you and what is just a business ploy. Since there is such a massive wave of people out there that either need to lose weight because they eat at McDonalds every other day or think they need to lose weight because society and celebrity pictures make them feel fat when they are perfectly healthy, companies are turning a buck by putting "Fat Free" on the box.

I understand the need for food production to go healthy. I get it. The fact of the matter is the food world has gotten out of control in the last few years; you really can't trust any type of processed food being sold now. Have you ever seen the documentary "Food Inc"? Watch it. I promise you will think differently about the food you eat after you do. The "healthy food" world seems to be nothing more than a niche or area where some of the big company food producers can turn record profits while you stay fat. It really doesn't really seem fair to me.

Don't just put it on the Box, DO IT!

It sure makes you feel good when you go grocery shopping and pick up all the health food doesn't it? I know that I always feel like such a better person for passing up on the Captain Crunch and getting the box of Total instead. Total is healthy right? I mean, that is what the commercial says. That is what the box says. The problem with the box and the commercial is they say stuff like, "No added Sugar" or "Fat Free" but sugar has so many names no one can really keep them all straight anymore and fat isn't necessarily a bad thing if you are eating the right ones. It is actually something our body needs. So I make a challenge to you food producers out there... Don't just put it on the box. Let's see a little follow through.

Why is all this important?

Well if you are like me, you just don't have the time to do all the research that is required to know what is actually good for you. You need help to decide what you should actually put in your cart at the store and what isn't just coming across as some false advertising. If I could show you a solution to this, would you listen? I am not going to say the big D (Diet) because that is not what you want to hear and best of all, that is NOT what this is. I want to show you something that takes the word "diet" out of Diet Plan which if you do the math right, it becomes just a plan... a guide... a path you can take to help you make the right decisions while in isle 12 at the grocery store.

Let me show you what I am talking about... Click the link below. You will be guided to a video (that's right, a video. You don't even have to read) that give a ton of FREE information about the very fundamentals I am talking about. Click fast because I don't know how long the video is going to be up. You will find that there is no need to diet at all when you learn about what is actually good for you and what isn't. I guarantee you will be shocked that some of the "health food" that you have been spending your hard earned money on is actually taking you a step backwards in your journey to living a long and healthy life. Good Food Good Health - Calcium

Hi Everyone

A good food for good health is calcium and is great for bones and staying slim after 50. As you all probably know I am closer to fifty now than forty, even though I still feel as I did in my twenty's, (some friends may add I still act like it sometimes).

Recently it has dawned on me that if I still want to feel this good for the next twenty years that I really should take steps now, so that I can maintain the good health that I am enjoying at the moment.

I have been looking in general at women's health of my age and how to keep up good health through the next twenty years.

Middle-aged women, like myself I guess, have been told for years that they should take calcium and vitamin D tablets to protect their bones against osteoporosis that is why recently I have increased my intake of calcium.

I always eat a good balanced diet and as you know my theory is 'good food good health', so when I checked on the amount of dairy products Ted and I consume to calculate our daily intake, I was a little surprised that it was myself not Ted that was not always getting the required amount.

Our two daughters easily reach their required amount from their normal diet, as one of the cereals they eat is fortified with vitamins and they also drink a couple of milk shakes a day.

Osteoporosis is a disease due to loss of bone density with a break down of bone structure. Diseased bones become brittle, porous and thin, resulting in bones becoming easier to break especially those in the legs, hips and arms.

Women are far more prone to osteoporosis, in fact 80 per cent of all sufferers are women. So making sure we maintain a healthy balanced diet rich in dairy products is essential, and to check that our levels of calcium and vitamin D intake is correct.

Although 99 per cent of calcium in the body is found in the teeth and bones, the other 1 per cent plays a major role in our health and is found in muscles, blood, soft tissue, organs and nerves.

Meeting your calcium need is quite easy if you like milk and dairy products. Generally 8 ounces of milk provides about 300mg of calcium and general daily requirements are: -

Children 1 - 8 years 500 - 800mg

9 - 18 years 1300 mg

19 - 50 years 1000mg

Women 51+ with HRT and men 51+ 1200mg

Women 51+ without HRT 1500mg

Breastfeeding and pregnant women 1200mg

The best sources of calcium and vitamin D are Milk, cheese and yoghurt, and also foods made with milk, such as custard, rice pudding, ice cream etc.

Fish and shellfish are an excellent source of Vitamin D - salmon, tuna, herring, halibut, shrimps and oysters as well as eggs, milk and cod liver oil.

Low fat foods also contain good amounts of calcium including low fat yoghurt, skimmed and low fat fluid milk and buttermilk. Cheese contains varying amounts of calcium and in general, the more firm the cheese the more calcium in contains. Soft cheese has a low amount present and cream cheese is not a good source at all.

Keeping good bone health is essential for all of us at any age, and therefore our intake of calcium is beneficial. Calcium moves in and out of the bones throughout our lives.

The need for good supplies of calcium throughout childhood and teen years is crucial, as bones grow in size and density through this period.

Calcium combines with phosphorous to form teeth and bones, making them hard and resistant to decay and breaks, it also: -

Is vital in blood to help it clot normally.

Helps muscles to contract normally. A deficiency can cause spasms and cramp.

Is essential in the nervous system for messages to be passed from the brain to other parts if the body and back again.

Helps to regulate blood pressure. A deficiency or low intake of calcium has been associated with high blood pressure.

Calcium may help with the prevention of colon cancer. This is thought to work in tow ways, one if that it binds with fat and bile acids in the large intestine to keep them from causing harm, the other that it prevents the excessive growth of cells in the intestines that could otherwise lead to cancer.

Also new research has found that another incentive for taking calcium is that
It can help you stay slim, and this interested me greatly. The study found that women who were over 50 and took regular calcium and Vitamin D supplements are less likely to gain weight than those who do not, and what was surprising the women who had previously been deficient in Vitamin D and calcium had the greatest benefits.

The slimming effect is thought to be down to the fact that there is an improved breakdown of fat cells and also an increase in the production of leptin, a chemical that curbs your appetite.
Also experts said that stimulation of the metabolism is likely to be increased with a better balance of nutrients in our diet, and so I cannot stress to much the importance of the 'good food good health' benefits, and equally if you can get the required amount of calcium from a balanced diet can only be a plus, helping your body fight many diseases and the ever ageing process.

I have mentioned vitamin D several times and this is very important as calcium is not readily absorbed and used without this fat-soluble vitamin.

Vitamin D is often referred to as the 'sunshine vitamin', as the action of the suns ultra violet rays forms vitamin D in the skin.

Specialists say that we need 15 minutes of sunlight to produce enough vitamin D in fair skinned people which should last for a couple of days, darker skinned people however need up to 3 hours.

The use of sunscreen 8 SPF of higher will form a barrier and prevent the formulation of vitamin D, so just wait 15 minutes before applying, but so not do this through the hottest hours. Clouds and window glass also prevent penetration of ultra violet rays.

So for good bone health - which means having the most dense and strong bones possible at reaching adulthood, a regular good intake of calcium is needed and continuously required after this age to help eliminate the chance of osteoporosis in latter years.

If to little calcium has been stored before the age of thirty in the bones or calcium is drawn out to fast in later life, then osteoporosis is at a greater risk.

All our bodies after the age of forty lose calcium quicker in the bones than going back in, and because of this we all need to be made aware just how important calcium in the diet is.

Many people have been put off from consuming dairy products over the past twenty or so years, and because of this health specialists are concerned about the future female population and the risk of osteoporosis. Also the specialists are watching the worrying trend of teenagers and fad diets that will cause complications to well being in future generations.

So for all of us the message is do not skimp on your dairy product intake, skimmed milk is just as rich in calcium, check you are consuming the correct amount in your diet. If you cannot get the required amounts in your daily diet then think about supplements. Always check with your doctor or medical practice before taking supplements as a sensible precaution, as it is with any medication.

Organic Raw Food

Organic raw food is an important part of the raw food diet. Organic food is grown using age old farming techniques that do not require the use of pesticides which can be harmful to both you and the environment. If you goal is to improve your health with a raw food diet you should make this food a part of your resolution.

Why Eat Raw Food?

The raw food diet is a healthy alternative to eating cooked and over processed foods. When food is cooked it loses most of its nutritional value. Raw foods keep their nutritional value and pass it along to you.

One of the most important nutritional elements of any food item is digestive enzymes. Once food is heated to 116°F or higher all the healthy enzymes are destroyed. This has major consequences on your health.

This food supplies your body with the enzymes it needs to digest and absorb food. If the food you eat is not digested and absorbed by these enzymes it can collect in the fat cells and other parts of your body. This is dangerous as it can lead to diseases and other illnesses.

Go Organic

The first step to this diet is to eliminate most processed and all cooked food items from your diet. This may seem difficult but you will find many delicious foods and even combination's of these foods that make a delightful meal.

Once a person has committed to a this diet it makes sense to eat raw food. If you are on this diet in an attempt to improve your health eating foods grown using heavy and poisonous pesticides will defeat the purpose.

Organic food is free of toxins that come from pesticides. And, it is easier than ever to find this food in your local area. The number of organic farmers has increased by over 72 percent in the past 5 years.

These foods can be found in health food stores, farmer's markets, local produce stands, and your local grocery store produce aisle. Look for food items that have been certified 100 percent organic. Many foods advertised as organic are not completely free of pesticides but certified organic foods are just as promised - pesticide, toxin, and chemical free.

One of the healthiest vegan
diets focuses on carbohydrates. The 80/10/10 diet, developed by Dr. Douglas Graham suggests eating to mimic the nutrients in your body. This means 80 percent of your calories should come from fruits, 10 from proteins, and 10 percent from fats.

The Cost of Going Organic

The fear of high costs keeps many raw foodists from buying organic food. Admittedly, most organic produce is slightly higher than traditional produce. Advocates of this food say it is a give and take situation because food costs in other areas will be reduced.

According to organic proponents you may spend a little more for this food but you gain so much for this small amount. This food improves both your physical and mental health. This means fewer health costs. A healthy, organic diet will cut down your need for doctor's visits, prescription medicines, and over the counter medicines. Better health can even decrease the days missed from work due to illness.

The choice is yours. For most it is a simple one. A few more cents on the front end, for this food, saves you lots of dollars on the back end - doctor visits, medicine, and time missed from work.

Organic raw food is an important part of the raw food lifestyle. It is very easy to incorporate organic vegetables and fruits into your existing diet. Switch to organic and watch your health improve.
